David Esposito: Can Standard Ultrasound Detect May Thurner Syndrome?
David Esposito, Chairman Department of Surgery, Chief of Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Milford Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Can a regular doctor diagnose May-Thurner Syndrome with a standard ultrasound, or do I need a specialized vascular institute?
If you have persistent left leg swelling, pain, heaviness, or a history of unexplained blood clots, you may wonder whether a standard ultrasound can identify May-Thurner Syndrome.
A duplex ultrasound is often an important first step because it can evaluate blood flow and look for signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
However, May-Thurner Syndrome involves compression of the left iliac vein deep within the pelvis, an area that may require additional vascular imaging and specialized expertise to fully evaluate.
At Milford Vascular Institute, our Board-Certified Vascular Specialists perform comprehensive vascular evaluations and use advanced imaging such as Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to examine the vein from inside the vessel and determine the location and severity of compression.
For patients who require treatment, minimally invasive endovascular options may include angioplasty and venous stenting, depending on individual findings.
If ongoing one-sided leg swelling or pain remains unexplained, getting a specialized vascular evaluation can help identify the cause and determine the appropriate next step.
