Aimee Burtenshaw: The Impact of the Infected Blood Inquiry on Hospital Transfusion Laboratories

Aimee Burtenshaw, Patient Blood Management Practitioner at NHS Blood and Transplant, shared a post LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in IBMS Biomedical Scientist, adding:

“From Tragedy to Change: Lab Lessons from the Infected Blood Inquiry

This month, colleagues from the NHS Blood and Transplant Patient Blood Management Team, together with Nicola Kirkham, Senior Biomedical Scientist at Royal Derby Hospital, have had the privilege of publishing an article in the IBMS Biomedical Scientist magazine, exploring the impact of the Infected Blood Inquiry on hospital transfusion laboratories.

For those of us working in transfusion and blood safety, the Inquiry has been a powerful reminder of the responsibility we hold to patients and the importance of never losing sight of the lessons of the past.

It has prompted reflection across healthcare on governance, quality, communication, transparency, and the culture needed to keep patients safe.

In this article, we share our perspectives on the Inquiry’s findings, the challenges and opportunities it presents for laboratory services, and how we can continue to strengthen practice to support safer care for the patients who rely on us every day.

IBMS members can access the full publication through Biomedical Scientist magazine.

We hope it helps continue the important conversation about learning from past failures, driving improvement in current practice, and ensuring future generations of patients receive the safest possible care.

We’d be delighted to hear your thoughts and reflections on the lessons the profession can take forward.”
