Yahya Tawfik: Rising Iron Deficiency in the US – 10 Million More Adults Affected Since 1999

Yahya Tawfik, Assistant Professor at King Saud University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in The American Journal of Medicine, adding:

“Excited to share our latest work ‘Temporal Trends in Absolute Iron Deficiency Among US Adults.’

Iron deficiency isn’t just about anemia.

Even without anemia, it’s been linked to impaired physical function, neurocognitive problems, heart failure, and mortality.

Yet how its prevalence has changed over time in the US hasn’t been well defined.

Using NHANES data, we compared 1999–2002 with 2017–2020:

  • Age- and sex-adjusted prevalence of absolute iron deficiency rose from 11.2% to 14.2%
  • That’s roughly 22.8 million → 32.3 million US adults
  • The biggest increase was in women aged 18–50, up 6.4%

These results raise important questions about what’s driving the rise and how we can better identify those affected before it impacts their health.

Grateful to work alongside lman Aboelsaad, Michael D. Nelson, Hsin-Jun Yang, and Leo Buckley on this one.”
