Denis Oduor: Preparedness for Postpartum Haemorrhage Must Include Preparedness for Blood
Denis Oduor, Nairobi County Blood Services Coordinator at Nairobi City County, shared EldonCard’s post on LinkedIn:
“A powerful and timely call to action.
As we mark World PPH Day, I am reminded of a message I have continued to emphasise in Nairobi County: preparedness for postpartum haemorrhage must include preparedness for blood.
We can have skilled midwives, timely recognition, medicines and clinical protocols-but when severe haemorrhage occurs, safe blood must be available, accessible and ready when it is needed.
This is why strengthening voluntary blood donation, reliable blood collection systems, screening, component preparation, cold-chain capacity and timely distribution must remain an integral part of maternal and newborn health preparedness.
I commend the EndPPH Foundation, EldonCard, International Confederation of Midwives and all partners advancing the global call to end preventable maternal deaths from PPH.
Nairobi Kenya has made important progress, but we must continue turning policy, partnerships and innovation into preparedness at the facility and community level.
We remain committed to working with midwives, maternity teams, blood services, government, development partners and communities to ensure that blood is closer to the mother when she needs it most.
No woman should die because lifesaving blood was not available in time.
Blood should not wait for the patient.”
EldonCard shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today is World PPH Day
Postpartum haemorrhage remains the leading cause of maternal death worldwide.
Nearly 45,000 women died from it in 2023 alone, most of them in low- and middle-income countries.
These deaths are preventable.
The medicines, tools and training exist. What’s needed is the commitment to get them to every woman, everywhere.
When bleeding is severe, every minute counts, and a blood transfusion can save a mother’s life. Yet in many health facilities, simply knowing a mother’s blood group means waiting for a lab that may be hours away.
At Eldon Biologicals, we believe blood typing should be available wherever a woman gives birth.
EldonCard gives an ABO and RhD result in minutes at the point of care, with no lab, electricity or cold chain needed.
Knowing blood groups in advance, for both mothers and potential donors, helps health systems be ready when the emergency comes.
We stand with midwives, health workers and partners worldwide in the call to end preventable deaths from PPH.
No woman should die giving life.”
