Zahra Ghasemi: The Role of Recovered and Source Plasma in Plasma Fractionation

Zahra Ghasemi, Pharmacoeconomist, Member of Health Technology Assessment international and Cochrane, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“It’s International Plasma Awareness Week, and it’s the perfect time to learn something new about plasma: the different ways it’s collected and how it becomes life-saving medicine.

Every Plasma Awareness Week, we say ‘Donate Plasma’, but which plasma?

Plasma reaches fractionation facilities in two ways: recovered and source.

Both can become immunoglobulins, albumin, and clotting factors, but each comes with its own challenges.

That’s why every health system eventually asks:

How much should we rely on each one?

How do we make sure recovered plasma isn’t wasted?

How do we scale up source plasma without compromising donor safety or quality?

So this Plasma Awareness Week, instead of only repeating the slogan, it’s worth learning how these decisions are actually made.

A good place to start is a two-day online workshop running today and tomorrow, hosted by the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization and the High Institute for Research and Education in Transfusion Medicine, a WHO Collaborating Centre:

‘Optimal Collection and Fractionation of Recovered and Source Plasma.’
