Vikash Jaiswal: Does Timing Matter for Calcium in Pre-Eclampsia Prevention?

We discuss a timely question in pre-eclampsia prevention: Could the timing of calcium supplementation matter?
An individual participant data meta-analysis of 7 trials and 16,828 women found no clear overall reduction in pre-eclampsia with calcium supplementation (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.73–1.07).
- The analysis suggested a possible benefit with earlier initiation; at 10 weeks’ gestation, the modelled OR was 0.65 (95% CI 0.48–0.90).
- This finding is hypothesis-generating and needs confirmation in trials that directly compare earlier and later initiation.
- We highlight the importance of revisiting when calcium is offered and expanding access to early antenatal care.”
