Alex Larson: Why Normal Bloodwork Does Not Always Tell the Whole Story

Alex Larson, Owner and CEO of Alex Larson Nutrition LLC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Your hemoglobin is normal.Your serum iron looks fine. But your ferritin is low.

So, are you actually iron deficient?

This is where interpreting bloodwork can get confusing for endurance athletes.

Ferritin reflects your bodys iron stores, while hemoglobin helps transport oxygen through your bloodstream. And those two markers dont always tell the same story.

You can have depleted iron stores before your hemoglobin drops below the normal range. This is often referred to as iron deficiency without anemia.

And its one reason I encourage athletes to look beyond a single lab value when evaluating their iron status. Because ‘normal’ bloodwork doesnt always tell the whole story.

In Part 2 of my iron and ferritin series, I break down what these different lab markers mean and why ferritin can be low even when other results look normal.

Have you ever received confusing or conflicting advice about your iron labs?”
