Satyam Arora: Umbilical Cord Blood for Neonatal Transfusions
Satyam Arora, Regional Director for South East Asia at the International Society of Blood Transfusion, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Transfusion and Apheresis Science, adding:
”Umbilical Cord Blood for Neonatal Transfusions: Taking Another Step Forward
Pleased to share our recent publication in Transfusion and Apheresis Science, exploring the feasibility of collecting and storing umbilical cord blood (UCB) as whole blood for neonatal transfusions in India.
Building on the encouraging findings of the BORN trial, our study demonstrated that UCB, naturally rich in fetal hemoglobin (HbF), maintains acceptable hematological and biochemical characteristics over 14 days of refrigerated storage.
While these findings are encouraging, further work is needed to optimize collection, processing, storage, and microbiological safety before clinical implementation.
Our larger goal is to explore whether we can make neonatal transfusions more physiologically appropriate, particularly for extremely premature infants.
Grateful to our co-authors and collaborators for their continued efforts in advancing this research. Anupa Pokhrel, Kriti Batni, Arisha Khan.”
