Hassan Raza: Beyond the 100 Minus Age Rule in Bone Marrow Cellularity
Hassan Raza, Consultant Hematologist and Transfusion Medicine Specialist, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jerry Wong et al, published in American Journal of Clinical Pathology, adding:
”Bone Marrow Cellularity: Is 100 − Age Still Relevant?
A study of 570 samples (Wong et al., 2024) suggests marrow cellularity declines by approximately 3% per decade, challenging the traditional formula.
Key points:
- Mean cellularity is calculated as 65 minus 0.3 multiplied by age (up to 70 years).
- After 70 years of age, it plateaus at approximately 43 percent.
- Age-adjusted reference ranges should be used.”
