Abeeha Faisal: Beyond the Textbooks – A Day With Children Living With Thalassemia
Abeeha Faisal, Social Media marketing Specialist and Associate at PreMed.PK, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Throwback to a day that stayed with me.
I had the opportunity to cover the media for a visit to the Jameela Sultana Foundation for Thalassemia Patients, organized by FUSH Welfare Society – and what started as a media responsibility turned into an experience I’ll genuinely remember.
Having donated blood multiple times before, this was a cause I already felt connected to.
Being there in person, meeting the children, hearing their stories, and documenting the day through photography and video gave that connection an entirely different meaning.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body does not produce enough healthy haemoglobin.
While thalassemia minor/trait is generally milder and may cause little or no symptoms, thalassemia major is much more severe and can require regular blood transfusions to manage the resulting anaemia.
Long-term transfusion therapy can also bring challenges such as iron overload, making consistent medical care an important part of living with the condition.
But beyond everything I knew from textbooks, it was the children themselves who left the biggest impression on me.
Especially Fatima, a 6-year-old, whose little conversations and insights about life made me pause and reflect on my own.
There was something incredibly humbling about seeing so much perspective and spirit in someone so young.
While compiling the footage afterwards, I got to bring together some of the most cherished moments of the visit through my video editing and media skills.
Every clip felt like more than just content – it was a memory of people, conversations, smiles, and a day that reminded me why community work matters.
Looking forward to more opportunities where I can combine my interests in healthcare, media, volunteering, and community work to document stories that deserve to be seen.”
