Alan Nurden: How Platelet Integrins Intervene in Cancer Metastasis and Tumor Development
Alan Nurden, Emeritus Research Director at CNRS, Co-Founder of the French National Reference Centre for Inherited Platelet Disorders (CRPP), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Emily Janus-Bell et al, published in Cell Press:
“Up to now, studies on patients with Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) and platelets either lacking the alphaIIbbeta3 integrin or with mutations limiting its function have contributed to advances in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and in particular, arterial thrombosis, where this integrin has a key role.
However, in a recent paper, Emily Janus-Bell and her colleagues used mouse models to underline how platelet integrins also intervene in cancer metastasis and tumor development. So, is the evolution of cancer in GT patients different? In fact, this same question applies to diabetes and all major inflammatory and viral-induced pathologies where platelets and their integrins may intervene in one way or another. International databases need to be set up to help answer these questions.
Not only for arterial and venous thrombosis, treatment of all major illnesses in GT patients may require special thought.”
