Alfonso Tafur: RIETE Registry Analysis Supports More Equitable Approaches to VTE Care

Alfonso Tafur, Board Member at VAS European Independent Foundation in Angiology and Vasculearn Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Proud to present our research at ISTH 2026 in Paris.

Our RIETE Registry analysis examined early outcomes after venous thromboembolism (VTE) in Hispanic versus non-Hispanic patients, one of the largest real-world international cohorts addressing this important question.

Key findings:

  • Hispanic patients experienced higher 90-day mortality after VTE.
  • They also had higher rates of recurrent VTE.
  • Major bleeding rates were similar, suggesting that differences in outcomes are not simply explained by excess bleeding risk.
  • These findings persisted after adjustment for potential confounders, highlighting important disparities that deserve further investigation.

As VTE care becomes increasingly personalized, understanding how outcomes vary across diverse populations is essential to developing more equitable prevention and treatment strategies.

Grateful to my collaborators, the RIETE investigators, and everyone committed to improving care for patients with thromboembolic disease worldwide.”
