“A Year of Progress, Transformation and Renewed Commitment
Yesterday, we held our Annual Staff Meeting of the Ethiopian Blood and Tissue Bank Service (EBTBS) to review our performance, reflect on challenges, and align on the reform agenda and priorities for the coming fiscal year.
The year brought significant milestones:
- 476,000+ units of blood collected (a 12% increase from last year) and 570+ corneas collected.
- 7 new blood banks and one eye bank added, expanding access across the country.
- Automated testing centers increased from 7 to 12, alongside the introduction of a NAT platform.
- 100 freezers distributed, with new cold and freezing rooms established at three high-performing regional centers and the national center.
- Apheresis and REVEOS automated component processing introduced—major steps forward in efficiency, quality and innovation.
- Preparations for Level 3 accreditation and the stem cell processing laboratory are well underway.
- Digital transformation emerged as one of the defining achievements of the year.
We are working on legislation, policy, and training to advance the transition toward coordinating organ donation and transplantation, in addition to the existing mandates for blood, tissue, and cellular therapy services.
These achievements were made despite significant challenges, including human-resource shortages, financial constraints, supply-chain unpredictability, and logistics gaps.
Looking ahead, our reform agenda will place strong emphasis on competency assessment, workforce development, and continuous improvement.
The message is simple: we must not only expand our services – we must build the capabilities, systems, and people required to sustain excellence.
