Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro: Advancing PBM Through Evidence-Based, Patient-Centred Transfusion Care
Augustina Isioma Ikusemoro, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Sharjah Blood Transfusion and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Advancing Patient Blood Management: A Commitment to Safer, Smarter, and Patient-Centred Transfusion Care.
I am delighted to share the successful completion of the 7th Edition of the Certificate Course in Patient Blood Management (PBM) 2026, organised by Werfen Academy.
Patient Blood Management is more than a clinical strategy; it represents a fundamental shift towards evidence-based, patient-centred healthcare, where the focus is on optimising patients’ own blood, preventing avoidable blood loss, and ensuring the appropriate use of blood components.
As a Haematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialist, I strongly believe that the future of transfusion medicine lies not only in ensuring the availability and safety of blood products but also in ensuring that every transfusion is clinically justified, optimised, and aligned with the best possible patient outcomes.
This learning experience further strengthens my commitment to:
- Promoting evidence-based Patient Blood Management practices.
- Improving transfusion safety and clinical decision-making.
- Encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration to minimise unnecessary transfusions.
- Advancing innovative, sustainable, and patient-centred approaches to blood utilisation.
- Supporting the integration of PBM principles into healthcare systems, particularly in resource-limited settings.
My sincere appreciation to Dr. Ajay Gandhi, Course Director, Werfen Academy, and the distinguished faculty for delivering this valuable educational experience.
The ultimate goal is not simply to transfuse blood safely, but to improve patient outcomes by ensuring the right patient receives the right intervention at the right time.
A question for my colleagues in healthcare: What do you consider the greatest barrier to implementing effective Patient Blood Management programmes in your healthcare institution?
I would love to hear your perspectives.”
