Carlos Canelo-Aybar: First Steps Toward the New APS Diagnostic Guideline

Carlos Canelo-Aybar, Systematic Reviewer and Clinical Guideline Methodologist at Iberoamerican Cochrane Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“We recently held the first Steering Committee meeting for the Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) Diagnostic Guideline, where I am serving as Methodology Co-Chair, collaborating with Effectia InnovationSolutions on an initiative coordinated jointly with the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and endorsed by International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).

The kick-off brought together an international Steering Committee to establish the governance and methodological framework for the guideline and begin the first round of discussion and refinement of the PICO-Dx questions that will guide the evidence reviews.

In this role, I will contribute to the methodological development of the guideline, including GRADE methods, evidence synthesis, and the Evidence-to-Decision process. We also plan to explore the responsible use of AI-supported approaches in selected stages of evidence synthesis, with transparency and human oversight remaining central.

The distinction between classification and diagnosis is particularly relevant in APS, where important questions remain about how patients should be diagnosed in real-world clinical practice. Looking forward to contributing to a guideline designed to help address this gap.”
