Carly Newton: Why Vascular Access Is Critical to Expanding Red Blood Cell Exchange
Carly Newton, Sr Manager of Apheresis Clinical Marketing at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Last year we surveyed 100 physicians who prescribe for sickle cell disease patients and asked what stands between their patients and red blood cell exchange.
The number 1 answer? Vascular Access.
So we listened.
Last week at NASCC 2026, I co-facilitated a focus group with the providers who manage this on the ground.
What stuck with me most:
Having the technology isn’t the same as being able to use it.
Attendees described Vascular Access tools already sitting in their hospitals that are effectively out of reach in the moment that matters.
Anything that solves this can’t be boutique.
If it needs a specialist to place, or a separate platform to support it, it recreates the barrier it was meant to remove.
Training, nurse confidence, scheduling pressure — the same themes, were discussed over and over.
A reminder how important advancements in this area are to close gaps in access to care for these important therapies.
A privilege to spend that time with clinicians who do this work daily and speak candidly about what still needs to change.
Broadly usable is how we get more patients to the therapy they need.”
