Claire McIvor: One Year at the Stroke Association and Grateful for a Workplace That Made It Possible

Claire McIvor, Head of Health Systems Insight and Engagement at Stroke Association, shared on LinkedIn:

”Today is my one year anniversary of working for the Stroke Association.

When I interviewed for the role of Head of Health Systems Insight and Engagement in December 2024, I was six months pregnant and facing the reality of having no maternity leave or pay once my 10-month consultancy with the WHO came to an end three months later.

What stood out immediately was the response I received.

Rather than seeing barriers my would-be manager Maeva May reached out to see how we could make it work.

Together, we agreed on a delayed start date giving me the time to have my daughter and have some recovery time before beginning the role in June 2025.

I returned on a phased schedule, increasing from two days a week to full time with regular check-ins to make sure I was managing well.

I also had protected time for pumping so I could continue breastfeeding for the first year.

My team were also incredibly patient with me, giving me the time, space, and support needed to understand this new role whilst navigating the sickness bugs and sleep deprivation of new parenthood!

I’m so grateful to everyone at the Stroke Association for the kindness, flexibility, and support given to me over the past year.

This experience has shown me what it really means to support women and mothers returning to work, not just through policies but in practice.”
