Danny Gaskin: BBTS 2026 and the Evolving Role of Transfusion in Maternity Care

”This year’s British Blood Transfusion Society Transfusion Practitioner Special Interest Group session will focus on maternity care, one of the most important and topical challenges facing healthcare today.

Those of us working in transfusion play a vital role in supporting safe maternity services, from Anti-D prophylaxis and antibody investigation through to fetomaternal haemorrhage estimation and support for obstetric haemorrhage.

With maternity care firmly in the national spotlight, it feels like the right time for the transfusion community to be part of the conversation.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming a multidisciplinary panel of speakers, including medics, midwives, and Transfusion Practitioners from both nursing and healthcare science backgrounds, as we discuss the delivery of safe and effective Anti-D services.

If you’re attending BBTS 2026 in Glasgow this September, join us on Tuesday 15 September, from 09:30 to 11:00.

We’ll also be presenting the 2026 BBTS Transfusion Practitioner Award and hearing a series of two-minute flash talks showcasing some of the impressive and important work taking place in transfusion services across the UK.
