David McIntosh: Raising Awareness on the Worldwide Shortage of Plasma-Derived Medicines

David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared Immune Deficiency Foundation’s post on LinkedIn:

“Hear, hear … we need to raise awareness globally – urgently!

I repost this partly in warm support of the message, but also to add a footnote….

Awareness of what, exactly …?

  • Awareness of the desperate worldwide shortages of plasma-derived medicines – and the need to take decisive action to eliminate them.
  • Awareness that no amount of crying and wringing of hands will create vital plasma-derived medicines where none exist today (ie in 90% of the World). What’s required is a four-fold increase in the total availability of plasma-derived medicines, globally.
  • Awareness also that this – what is needed to start actually meeting the majority of patients’ needs, worldwide – will require a quarter of a billion litres of extra donated human plasma for pharmaceutical processing, each year – 4 times what is actually available today.
  • Awareness, finally, that talking and writing about this is unlikely to deliver much added value.

What’s needed is action – decisive, conserted, collective action to –

  • transform global plasma collection and donation norms
  • extend plasma collection to all four corners of the Earth – using proven successful techniques that already deliver for patients in more than 15% of the World, and can easily deliver in the remaining 85%, if adopted and deployed with the necessary commitment and enthusiasm.

Want to make a real impact?

Please spread the word.

Please argue in favour of an increased global plasma harvest.

And please do all you can to help bring it about.”

Immune Deficiency Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:

World PI Week is almost here

Want to make a real impact?

Supporting the Primary Immunodeficiency community can take many forms, from donating plasma to sharing important information and helping fund critical research.

Together, we’re encouraging everyone to take action, spread knowledge, and stand with those living with PI.

Every action, big or small, makes a difference.”
