Denis Oduor: Building Community Partnerships to Guarantee Safe Blood Transfusion Access
Denis Oduor, Nairobi County Blood Services Coordinator at Nairobi City County, shared Daily Nation‘s post on LinkedIn:
“Blood donation is not merely an act of giving; it is an act of leadership, solidarity and collective responsibility.
As Nairobi County continues to strengthen blood transfusion services, our message must remain clear: blood should be available before the patient needs it. Every unit collected represents preparedness for an emergency, hope for a mother, a child, a trauma patient, or anyone whose life may depend on timely transfusion.
We must move from responding to blood shortages to building a culture of regular voluntary blood donation, stronger partnerships and blood services that are closer to our communities.
The responsibility belongs to all of us — government, partners, institutions, communities and, most importantly, our voluntary donors.
Let us make blood availability a shared public responsibility. Let us bring blood closer to the people. Let us save more lives.
Blood Should Not Wait.”
Daily Nation shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As Kenya’s most populous county and home to its largest referral and specialised hospitals, Nairobi records the highest demand for blood transfusions, from maternity and oncology units to cases of paediatric anaemia and unexplained anaemia.
Yet voluntary, unpaid blood donation, which the WHO considers the gold standard, accounts for only 60 per cent of donations in the county, well below the target of 100 per cent.
The gap pushes hospitals towards family replacement donation. This is where health facilities ask a patient’s relatives to find donors themselves, often at the last minute, once the patient is admitted.
