Denis Oduor: Strengthening Blood Safety – Mbagathi County Hospital Setting the Pace
Denis Oduor, Nairobi County Blood Services Coordinator at Nairobi City County, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Strengthening Blood Safety: Mbagathi County Hospital Setting the Pace!
Today, while at Mbagathi County Hospital for a Hospital Hemovigilance Committee meeting invite, I had an opportunity to tour the blood collection and laboratory screening sections.
One development particularly caught my attention: the installation and use of a Liaison immunoassay analyser, similar to the technology deployed in national and regional blood testing laboratories.
This is an impressive step forward by Nairobi City County through Mbagathi County Hospital.
Beyond the equipment itself, the operationalization of this investment by both KNBTS and County government, represents progress towards strengthening laboratory screening capacity, improving blood safety systems and bringing quality-assured blood services closer to the communities we serve.
It is a reminder that strengthening blood transfusion services is not merely about collecting more units; it is equally about investing in the technology, infrastructure, skilled workforce, quality assurance and hemovigilance systems that guarantee safer blood for patients.
As counties continue to take responsibility for healthcare delivery under devolution, initiatives such as this demonstrate what deliberate investment in local blood services can achieve.
Blood safety begins long before a unit reaches the patient. It begins with a willing donor, a competent laboratory, reliable screening technology and a robust quality management system.
Kudos to Mbagathi County Hospital and Nairobi City County for this commendable progress.
Blood should not wait. And neither should investments in blood safety.”
