Eugene Tang: A Look at What’s Happening in Life After Stroke Research Across Europe at ELASF 2026

Eugene Tang, NIHR RRDN NENC Primary Care Settings Lead at NIHR Research Delivery Network, shared on LinkedIn:

”’Doctors became partners in our lives’

First time here at Stroke Alliance For Europe (SAFE) ELASF 2026 in Stockholm to look at what’s happening in Life After Stroke research across Europe particularly on the hidden impairments post stroke.

Hearing from Dimitra Fotoudi talk about her lived experience in looking after her family member with recurrent stroke.

Lots of initial focus on physical rehab as expected but emphasis here was on the invisible changes – thinking (slower processing, planning), emotions (anxiety, frustrations), personality and behaviour (withdrawal, irritability) and communication (misunderstandings).

Real, raw account of what life is really like for our patients and families – I’ve seen it (professionally and personally) and continue to see and hear it.

So i loved the quip that the ‘doctors became partners’ in their lives.

It emphasises both the treatment burden they face in the health and care system but also that as she said so brilliantly ‘recovery is not only medical – it is full of emotions, cognitive ..it is human.’

We need these partnerships to support our stroke patients and their families.

You were outstanding Dimitra Fotoudi”
