Gathoni Kungu: Run to End Postpartum Hemorrhage and Save Lives

”It’s a pleasure and an honour to play in the governance space.

Run for her and save her life is an amazing initiative.

When we talk about statistics, do you know that 10-12 women die in Kenya daily because of postpartum haemorrhage.

Mothers do not have to die while bringing new life into the world.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is excessive bleeding after childbirth and is one of the leading causes of maternal illness and death worldwide. It is a medical emergency, but with prompt recognition and treatment, most women recover well.

Causes

A helpful way to remember the causes is the’4 Ts’:

1. Tone (uterine atony)– the uterus does not contract effectively after delivery.

  • This is the most common cause, accounting for about 70–80% of cases.

2. Trauma

  • Tears of the cervix, vagina, or perineum
  • Uterine rupture
  • Hematomas

3. Tissue

  • Retained placenta or retained placental fragments
  • Abnormally adherent placenta (placenta accreta spectrum).

4. Thrombin

  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Conditions such as severe preeclampsia, sepsis, or inherited bleeding disorders.

The run is going to be on September 26th, 2026, from 8a.m. at Ulinzi Sports Ground along Langata Road.

The run is free.”
