“World Sickle Cell Awareness Day
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become sickle-shaped instead of round.
These cells can block blood flow, leading to severe pain, anemia, and other health complications.
How does it occur?
A child develops SCD when they inherit the sickle cell gene from both parents.
India has one of the world’s highest burdens of sickle cell disease.
Around 40,000–50,000 babies are born with SCD in India every year, while millions carry the sickle cell trait.
Early screening, timely diagnosis, and greater awareness can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life.
Could a simple genetic screening help prevent thousands of families from facing this challenge unknowingly?”
