“Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – ‘Mini Stroke’

What is TIA?

A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) is a temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain.

It causes stroke-like symptoms that resolve completely within minutes to hours (usually less than 1 hour).

Important: TIA is a warning sign of an impending stroke.

Clinical Features (Sudden onset)

  • Unilateral weakness or numbness (face/arm/leg)
  • Slurred speech or aphasia
  • Vision loss or blurred vision
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Sudden confusion

Duration

  • Typically a few minutes to less than 1 hour
  • By definition, no permanent neurological deficit

Why it matters

High risk of ischemic stroke, especially within 48 hours.

Requires urgent evaluation and management

  • ED Workup
  • CT brain / MRI
  • ECG (rule out atrial fibrillation)
  • Blood tests (glucose, lipids, coagulation)
  • Carotid Doppler / CTA

Management

  • Antiplatelet therapy (e.g., aspirin)
  • Control hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia
  • Anticoagulation if atrial fibrillation present
  • Lifestyle modification (stop smoking, diet)

 Red flag

  • Treat TIA as a medical emergency
  • Do Not ignore symptoms even if they resolve
