Ilenia Calcaterra: First Gene Therapy for Haemophilia B Management
Ilenia Calcaterra, Consultant Physician in Internal Medicine and Assistant Professor at the University of Naples Federico II, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today is one of those days that reminds us why we chose medicine.
At the Federico II University Hospital, the first gene therapy for haemophilia B in Campania has been successfully administered. A major milestone for our Centre, for our region and, above all, for a person who has lived his entire life with this condition.
Behind every scientific achievement, however, there is a human story.
Enrico’s words deeply moved me. His journey reflects the burden experienced by many people with haemophilia: recurrent infusions, the constant fear of bleeding, physical limitations, and the need to plan even the simplest aspects of everyday life around the disease.
I am especially grateful to Enrico for his firm determination to share his story publicly. Speaking openly about such a personal journey requires courage. Patient voices give meaning to scientific progress, help others living with the same condition feel less alone, and remind us that innovation must always be measured by the difference it makes in people’s lives.
For me, accompanying him throughout this path has been both a privilege and a profound responsibility. Sharing this moment with him and witnessing the beginning of a completely new chapter in his life is an emotion that is difficult to put into words.
Gene therapy is not simply a new treatment. It represents the possibility of moving beyond the continuous psychological burden of the disease towards what we increasingly describe as a ‘disease-free mind’: the freedom to live without haemophilia constantly defining every decision, activity or future plan.
This achievement was made possible by the commitment of an extraordinary multidisciplinary team, led by Professor Matteo Di Minno, and by the collaboration between clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, researchers, hospital management and institutions.
Today, scientific innovation has become a real opportunity for care—and, above all, a new possibility for life.
