Isaac Okello: A National Call to Action on World Sickle Cell Day 2026
Isaac Okello, Global Genes Leadership Council Member, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Earlier today, ahead of the commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day 2026 WSCD19 2026, the Director General of Health Services at the The Ministry of Health – Uganda called upon all stakeholders to strengthen efforts in the fight against sickle cell disease through coordinated and community-centered interventions.
He urged all stakeholders—including government institutions, religious and cultural leaders, civil society organizations, healthcare providers, researchers, development partners, and communities—to work together in strengthening awareness, prevention, early diagnosis, and access to quality care.
The Director General stressed that the fight against sickle cell disease must be rooted in community engagement, strengthened referral systems, informed reproductive health choices, and sustainable investments that reach every corner of the country.
He also underscored the importance of scaling up newborn screening, expanding genetic counseling services, integrating sickle cell interventions into existing health programs, and ensuring that every person living with sickle cell disease receives timely and comprehensive care.
The message is clear: ending the burden of sickle cell disease is possible, but it requires collective commitment, strategic partnerships, and sustained action.
As civil society of organizations under the Sickle Cell Alliance Uganda, we want to build a future where every child born with sickle cell disease has the opportunity to survive, thrive, and achieve their full potential.”
