James Garrard: Driving Innovation in Stroke Care Through Global Collaboration

James Garrard, Stroke and Geriatric Medicine Resident Doctor Doctor of Medicine Candidate, Kellogg College Clinical Research Fellow, Brainomix Ltd, Oxford, UK World Stroke Organisation Future Stroke Leaders Programme Cohort 3, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One week on from a fantastic trip to the World Stroke Congress 2026 with the Future Stroke Leaders Programme and the World Stroke Organization I’ve finally had some time to reflect.

The two-year FSLP has opened doors to collaborations, opportunities and friendships that I could never have imagined at the outset. Whilst I’m thrilled to graduate, I’m equally excited to build on these connections as an alumnus, and I hope this is just the beginning of a much bigger journey.

The congress itself was a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the work that has come out of these collaborations, including:
The honour of co-chairing a Future Leader session with Urs Fischer, which included presenting the findings of an international survey exploring technologies used to track patients during secondary transfer for mechanical thrombectomy. It was a pleasure to work on this with Nishita Singh, Gianluca De Rubeis, Tarig Fadalla, Christine Kremer, Bo Norrving
Thanks to Adnan Mujanović and Johanna Ospel for contributing to this session

Presenting work from my thesis on the development of a stroke-specific early warning score, which improved the prediction of adverse in-hospital outcomes, including neurological deterioration and death. Many thanks to James Kennedy, David Eyre, Augustine Luk and Stephen Gerry for their support and contributions.

Showcasing a poster from a collaboration between Brainomix and Remedy Pharmaceuticals, Inc. using data from the Phase 3 CHARM trial. This work demonstrated how automated AI analysis of non-contrast CT scans could identify patients with an ischaemic core volume <125 mL, in whom glibenclamide was associated with improved functional outcomes. A pleasure to contribute to this work alongside Davide Carone, George Harston, Sven Jacobson, Thomas MacAllister, W. Taylor Kimberly and Kevin Sheth

A hugely rewarding week, both scientifically and personally, and a reminder of the value of international collaboration in advancing stroke care.

Hopefully much more to come from these projects and collaborations in the near future!

Thanks to Christopher Chen, Valeria Caso, Laura Jolliffe, Shriram Varadharajan, Yina Quique, Juen Kiem Tan, Jessica Nolan, Dorcas Gandhi, Jussara Baggio, Julieta Rosales, Joao Brainer Andrade,  and the rest of the FSLP cohort 3.”
