Jason Carney: Addressing the National Blood Shortage Through AI-Driven Patient Blood Management

Jason Carney, Senior Vice President, Clinical Strategist at hc1, shared a post on LinkedIn:

The American Red Cross issued only the 2nd ever national critical blood supply crisis, and it isn’t just a blood bank problem—it’s a patient care problem, and one we have the ability to influence.

I spend a lot of time thinking about how we can build and deliver AI powered tools that improve outcomes before patients ever enter the operating room or labor and delivery unit.

One of the biggest opportunities is identifying and treating anemia before surgery and during pregnancy instead of relying on blood transfusions after complications arise.

Too often, anemia goes undiagnosed or untreated until a patient requires a transfusion. While blood transfusions save lives when they are truly needed, they should not become the default treatment for preventable anemia.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) powered by ClincialIQ is a one of a kind, evidence-based tool that focuses on:

  • Early identification and treatment of anemia
  • Minimizing unnecessary blood loss
  • Optimizing a patient’s own blood before, during, and after procedures
  • Using transfusions only when clinically appropriate

The impact extends far beyond conserving blood products.

Effective PBM has been shown to reduce complications, shorten hospital stays, improve recovery, and ultimately deliver better outcomes for patients.

At the same time, it helps preserve our nation’s blood supply for those who truly have no alternative.

The current blood shortage should be a call to action for every healthcare organization.

By making anemia management a standard part of preoperative and prenatal care, and by embracing comprehensive Patient Blood Management practices, we can reduce unnecessary transfusions, improve patient safety, and strengthen the resilience of our healthcare system.

Improving blood stewardship isn’t about using less blood – it’s about delivering better care.

That’s what hc1 delivers with Clinical IQ
