Jecko Thachil: Exploring the Origins and Meaning of the Term Hemophilia
Jecko Thachil, MAHSC Professor, at the University of Manchester, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Hemophilia is a well-known bleeding disorder.
But have you ever wondered why the term ‘hemophilia’ is a little intriguing?
The word comes from Greek: haemo means blood and philia means love of (for example, bibliophilia means a love of books).
So a name that literally means ‘love of blood ‘ for a bleeding disorder seems confusing – and even contradictory.
In this article, we explore why this ‘love of blood’ appears in the word hemophilia.”
