Kane O’Malley: Challenging Established Sample Handling Practices in Coagulation Diagnostics

Kane O’Malley, Specialist Biomedical Scientist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I have been fortunate enough to present my MSc project poster today at CLH 2026 UK NEQAS for Blood Coagulation.

I really enjoyed challenging the whole blood stability guidelines for ADAMTS13 TTP and lupus testing for different brands of tubes over 48h.

Conclusions:

  • ADAMTS13 activity is highly stable at room temperature for 12h, supporting transport as whole blood without the need for the preparation of frozen plasma, for this method of analysis.
  • Only Brand A showed statistically significant change in ADAMTS13 activity at 48h.
  • dRVVTs should not be tested after 4h as whole blood, in line with current guidelines, for this method of analysis.

This will help inform procurement of specimen tubes, reduce sample rejection and prevent delaying patient care.

I would like to thank all of my colleagues at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and my course leader Dr Chrystelle Egger M at Keele University for you ongoing support.”
