Kayla Garrett: Confirming Or Excluding APS Relies On Accurate Lupus Anticoagulant Testing
Kayla Garrett, Senior Talent Acquisition Partner at Roche, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When a patient is diagnosed with Lupus, looking deeper is critical. Confirming or excluding the severe complication known as Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) relies heavily on accurate Lupus Anticoagulant (LA) testing.
However, LA testing is a uniquely demanding analytical challenge, and an incorrect result can significantly impact patient management.
In our latest interview, global thrombosis authority Prof. Vittorio Pengo zooms in on the rigorous diagnostic requirements needed to get LA testing right.
He explains:
- The mandatory 3-step procedure: Why screening, mixing, and confirmatory steps provide non-redundant information and cannot be safely abbreviated.
- The necessity of parallel testing: Why relying on a single test is misleading, and why both dRVVT and aPTT-based assays are required.
- The limits of automation: Why dedicated human expertise is essential to interpret complex, paradoxical findings—such as the ‘Lupus cofactor’ effect—that automation simply cannot resolve.
