Keiyona Coots: Patient Blood Management as a Cornerstone of Safer Healthcare
Keiyona Coots, Clinical Nurse Coordinator at Main Line Health Lankenau Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Patient Blood Management Awareness Week | November 2–6, 2026
Patient Blood Management is more than a clinical initiative—it is a patient safety, quality, and healthcare stewardship strategy.
A comprehensive 15-hospital review of 6,696 blood-component transfusion events found that an estimated 40.5 percent–49.4 percent of transfused units were likely unnecessary.
The study was published in the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.
For healthcare leaders, this represents a significant opportunity to improve outcomes through earlier anemia identification and treatment, blood-conservation strategies, evidence-based transfusion practices, and stronger interdisciplinary collaboration.
Through my work with Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, I have seen how effective programs can align patient preferences with clinical excellence while supporting quality, safety, and responsible resource utilization.
Better blood management is not simply about using less blood—it is about delivering better, more intentional patient care.”
