Louise St. Germain Bannon: Supporting the World Thrombosis Day
Louise St. Germain Bannon, Interim Executive Director at International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“We are just days away from World Thrombosis Day, and this year, I’m asking my followers and connections to recognize it!
Over the past few weeks, following my mother’s knee replacement and a subsequent accident that resulted in another surgery on her knee, I found myself advocating for her in ways that reminded me just how important awareness and education around blood clots really are.
I was asking when she should start and stop her Eliquis, making sure her cardiology and orthopedic teams were communicating, asking questions about her risks and mobility, and even reaching out to colleagues who work in AFib to better understand her risks.
It reinforced something I already knew professionally, but experienced very personally: we all have a role in advocating for our health and the health of the people we love.
That becomes especially important as our loved ones get older, navigate multiple conditions and see multiple specialists.
We don’t always know what questions to ask.
We don’t always know what risks to look for.
But asking questions, speaking up and making sure the right people are talking to each other can make a difference.
That is why World Thrombosis Day matters.
Thrombosis can affect anyone, and awareness of risk factors, signs and symptoms can save lives.
So this October 13, I’m asking you to recognize World Thrombosis Day, a campaign of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).
Share information.
Start a conversation.
Learn the signs and symptoms.
And most importantly, advocate for yourself and the people you love.
A conversation could save a life.”
