Mario Ottiglio: Launching New Initiative During UNGA81 Week through WCSCD
Mario Ottiglio, Founder and Managing Director of Eleveya, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“During UNGA81 week, through our World Coalition on Sickle Cell Disease (WCSCD), we launched a new initiative:
OneSCD, together with UNICEF, the World Health Organization, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Pan American Health Organization, Africa CDC and a number of champion countries.
It comes one year after another milestone for the community: the inclusion of sickle cell disease language in the NCD HLM4 Political Declaration.
Sickle cell disease does not suffer from a lack of passionate people, good initiatives or expertise.
Quite the opposite.
What it has lacked for far too long is a way to connect them, across countries, institutions, communities and sectors, around a shared direction.
OneSCD is not another organization, another layer, or another logo competing for oxygen. The intention is to build a platform that helps existing efforts align, reinforce each other and move further together.
For a field that has been fragmented for decades, that matters enormously!!
And there was more to the week: the day before, I had the privilege of moderating From Burden to Breakthrough, a roundtable on financing the Imara Framework for sickle cell disease in Africa, convened with the Ministry of Health of Kenya, Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies and the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU), alongside our World Coalition on Sickle Cell Disease.
If OneSCD is about connecting the organizations and people already doing the work, Imara tackles another side of the same challenge:
Connecting the evidence to the people who make financing decisions, turning health priorities into investable plans, and creating enough political momentum to move from ‘we should’ to ‘we will.’
… and then, somewhere between the UN rooms, roundtables and side meetings, our own Coalition found time to sit together in New York, talk 2027, and reflect on our brief and intense journey so far.
It feels wind is changing for SCD and that we are building something real.”
