Mark Dawson: A Radical Rethink of Hemophilia Treatment
Mark Dawson, Head of Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) at Roche, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As a hematologist, few moments in medical history stand out as profoundly as the evolution of hemophilia care.
For decades, our reliance on donor-derived blood products led to tragedy – patients I personally cared for survived their bleeding disorders only to face the consequences of receiving contaminated transfusions carrying HIV and Hepatitis C.
Recombinant factor therapies finally brought safety, but the relentless burden of frequent infusions and the development of factor VIII inhibitors remained.
The true inflection point wasn’t an incremental improvement; it was a radical rethink.
By engineering a bispecific antibody to mimic the cofactor function of coagulation factor VIII, researchers bypassed factor replacement entirely and redefined the therapeutic paradigm.
I am delighted to see three visionary scientists, including our esteemed colleagues at Chugai, honored with the Lasker Award for this breakthrough.
It is a well-deserved recognition of that extraordinary leap in medicine.
Huge congratulations to the winners for their deep curiosity, sharp scientific thinking, and for fundamentally altering the natural history of this disease.
Your achievement is a masterclass in what happens when we challenge conventional thinking to transform human health.”
