Maxime Dely: Blood Donation – Bridging the Global Gap in Access

Maxime Dely, Therapeutic Solutions Sales Consultant at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Blood donation: A vital resource, yet unequally accessible

Although World Blood Donor Day has just passed, the message remains as relevant as ever.

Blood stocks in France are once again under pressure.

The recent heatwave, combined with the month of May—traditionally marked by multiple public holidays, long weekends, and favorable weather—has led to a decline in blood donations. It is a timely reminder of how essential it is to maintain adequate blood reserves to ensure continuity of care.

Fortunately, in France, these shortages are generally temporary and can be addressed through donor mobilization. But looking beyond our borders reveals a much more complex reality.

Each year, around 118.5 million blood donations are collected worldwide. Yet major disparities remain: high-income countries, representing only 16% of the world’s population, account for nearly 40% of all blood donations.

In many regions, particularly across Africa, the need for blood remains significant due to obstetric complications, trauma, severe anemia, malaria, sickle cell disease, and the growing use of medical procedures requiring blood products.

Reducing these inequalities requires more than increasing donations. It also depends on better awareness, improved diagnosis, stronger blood collection systems, and effective transfusion practices.

A global call to action is needed. Behind every transfusion is a donor.

Our healthcare systems rely on this generosity every day. Improving access to safe blood in underserved regions will be one of the major public health challenges of the coming decades.”Maxime Dely: Blood Donation - Bridging the Global Gap in Access
