”White Blood Cells (WBCs): The Body’s Natural Defense System
White Blood Cells (Leukocytes) are specialized immune cells that protect the body against bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and abnormal cells.
Unlike RBCs, WBCs are fewer in number but play the most critical role in immunity by identifying, attacking, and destroying harmful pathogens.
Types and Functions:
- • Neutrophils – First responders against bacterial infections.
- • Lymphocytes – Produce antibodies, provide long-term immunity (B and T cells).
- • Monocytes – Differentiate into macrophages and remove pathogens and dead cells by phagocytosis.
- • Eosinophils – Fight parasitic infections and are involved in allergic reactions.
- • Basophils – Release histamine and heparin during allergic and inflammatory responses.
Normal Total WBC Count: 4,000–11,000 cells/µL
Understanding WBC morphology and function is essential for interpreting CBC reports and diagnosing infections, allergies, immune disorders, and hematological diseases.”
