Peter Kouides: Why Raising the Ferritin Cutoff in Women Matters

Peter Kouides, Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of Rochester School of Medicine, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Roswell Park Memorial Cancer Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

“Been meaning to share this study from our team and to thank my colleague Dr Michelle Sholzberg at Saint Michael’s Toronto who based on her Delphi consensus study on raising the ferritin lower cutoff in females inspired me to bug our laboratory (though it took five years of bugging) to raise the lower cut off ferritin for females to the same range of 30 ng/ml as men with several very positive consequences.

Now the task ahead is improving our work flow in accommodating all these referrals for IV iron!!!

Shout out also to my superstar residents Dr Ali Abdelhay and Dr Mouna Reghis who took this idea I bounced off of them originally as a grand rounds presentation and ran with it!

Lastly, please convince your labs if not done already to raise the iron bar literally and figuratively in the spirit of gender equity!!”
