Roman Rodionov, Senior Consultant (Internal and Vascular Medicine, Apheresis), Head of the Angiology Research Lab at Dresden University of Technology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Is Lp(a) another homocysteine?
Remember the excitement around homocysteine?
Strong epidemiological associations, plausible biology – but lowering homocysteine ultimately failed to reduce cardiovascular events.
The enthusiasm around Lp(a) over the last year has been remarkable.
We have heard the word causal a lot – while still waiting for the ultimate clinical test: will lowering Lp(a) actually reduce cardiovascular events?
Now Lp(a) HORIZON with pelacarsen has not met its primary endpoint, despite lowering Lp(a).
Does this make Lp(a) another homocysteine?
Probably too early to say.
We need the full results, and other outcome trials are coming.
But more interesting question is: what will be the next big target for residual cardiovascular risk?”
