Sham Zamil: Wrapping up my Blood Bank rotation at Saudi German Hospital
Sham Zamil, Student at Umm Al-Qura University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Wrapping up my Blood Bank rotation at Saudi German Hospital as part of my Summer Training.
Throughout this rotation, I had the opportunity to strengthen both my theoretical knowledge and practical skills in transfusion medicine.
To reflect on this learning experience, I created a series of Blood Bank reference sheets based on the knowledge and practical skills I gained throughout this rotation.
During this rotation, I learned and practiced:
- ABO and Rh blood grouping (manual and automated methods)
- Pre-transfusion compatibility testing (Crossmatch) using manual and automated techniques
- Blood donor eligibility and the donation process
- Blood component preparation, storage, and clinical applications (PRBCs, Platelets, FFP, and Cryoprecipitate)
- Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) thawing and preparation for transfusion
- Rh/K phenotyping
- Blood bank workflow and pre-transfusion testing
- Special blood products and their clinical indications
This rotation at Saudi German Hospital provided valuable insight into the vital role of the Blood Bank in ensuring safe and effective transfusion practices while allowing me to apply laboratory principles in a real clinical setting.
Special appreciation goes to the Blood Bank staff for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to education.
Their patience, continuous support, and willingness to share their knowledge created a welcoming learning environment, making this rotation both enjoyable and highly educational.
Their guidance and encouragement played a significant role in making this experience truly enriching and memorable.
The attached reference sheets were created as my personal study notes to reinforce and organize the knowledge I gained during this rotation.
I’m grateful for everything I learned during this rotation and look forward to applying these experiences throughout my professional journey.”
