Shazmah Shaikh: How Does a Thrombus Actually Form?

Shazmah Shaikh, Doctor of Pharmacy at BLDE Association’s College of Pharmacy, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”How does a thrombus actually form?

Thrombosis isn’t simply ‘a blood clot.’

It is a complex process involving the vessel wall, platelets, and coagulation system.

From endothelial injury and platelet adhesion to thrombin generation and fibrin formation, every step contributes to the development of a stable thrombus.

Understanding this process is essential for understanding conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke.

The key takeaway:

Hemostasis protects us from bleeding—but when the same mechanisms become dysregulated, thrombosis can become life-threatening.

As a PharmD student, I find these mechanisms particularly interesting because they connect pathophysiology to pharmacology and, ultimately, to clinical decision-making.
