Shruthi Narayan: Blood Clot Awareness Saves Lives Through NBCA
Shruthi Narayan, President at Penumbra, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Blood clots affect 900,000 Americans each year and are the leading cause of preventable death among hospital patients — yet many people don’t know the warning signs until it’s too late.
That’s why Penumbra recently partnered with National Blood Clot Alliance on a statewide bus tour across Mississippi — a state with a high burden of blood clots and significant barriers to care that make education crucial. On the tour, advocates and educators met communities face to face to make sure more people know what to watch for.
We had the privilege of speaking with blood clot survivors along the way, including Karen D. Adams. She is a cancer survivor who suffered a life-threatening saddle pulmonary embolism (PE) during her battle with cancer.
Complications from her cancer treatment led to a blood transfusion and while bedridden, Karen developed blood clots. Karen joined the tour to help people understand that ‘knowing the signs of blood clots could help save a life, starting with your own. Advocate for yourself.’
Blood clots can affect anyone.
That is the kind of perspective that grounds our work in what it’s really about: people.
Thank you to NBCA and every member of the Penumbra team for all your work on this bus tour.
Awareness is the first step to better outcomes — and education like this moves the needle.
