Why Genetic Predisposition Does Not Always Lead to Thrombosis – Stork Genetics
Stork Genetics shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In October 2026, Hurts was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary emboli (PE)—blood clots in a deep vein and lungs.
Thankfully, his medical team expects him to make a full recovery and be back next year.
But here’s why his story matters off the field.
Everyone can have risk factors that increase their chance for a blood clot.
Some of these you can’t control, like inherited genetic predispositions in the F5, F2, and SERPINC1 genes.
But having a genetic change or two in these genes doesn’t guarantee a clot will form.
That’s because clotting disorders are multifactorial, meaning that both genes and environmental factors impact risk.
So what can you do to reduce your risk (even if you have a genetic variant?)
- Get up and move around regularly, especially during long trips.
- Ask your family members if they’ve every had a history of a blood clot, DVT, or PE.
- Talk to a genetic counselor about the availability of genetic testing for hereditary clotting disorders.
- Consider using non-hormonal birth control.
Remember, often the best game plan is to educate yourself.”
