Advancing Rapid Prehospital Stroke Diagnosis Through StrokeCap Innovative Technology – ForTra

ForTra gGmbH for Research Transfer of the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation (ForTra) shared on LinkedIn:

ForTra is supporting 14 innovative projects with targeted regulatory guidance – including StrokeCap, which aims to improve early stroke diagnostics.

When stroke symptoms occur, rapid and reliable diagnosis is essential – because in stroke care, time is brain.

Fast and precise decision-making is crucial to guide patients to the right hospital as early as possible.

Yet emergency medical teams still often rely on clinical scores, which can lead to uncertainty, delays, or transport to hospitals without specialized stroke care.

Dr. Patrick Vogel and his team at The Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg are currently developing StrokeCap, a portable measuring cap designed to assess cerebral blood flow in real time without radiation.

Based on magnetic particle spectroscopy and already approved magnetic nanoparticles, the technology could enable the detection of perfusion disturbances directly at the emergency scene.

With ForTra support, the project will receive targeted regulatory guidance, including preparation for consultations with the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

This marks an important step toward clinical translation – and, ultimately, faster and safer stroke care for patients.”
