Tareq Abadl: The Science of Blood Component Separation and Targeted Transfusion Care
Tareq Abadl, Medical Lab Specialist, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Same donation. Different components. Different patients. Different lives saved.
Packed RBCs (pRBCs)
- Storage: 1–6°C
- Shelf life: 42 days
- Used for acute and chronic blood loss — raises Hb and maintains tissue oxygenation.
- Trigger: Hb less than 7 g/dL
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
- Storage: −18°C
- Shelf life: 1 year
- Contains all clotting factors — used to reverse anticoagulant effects and treat coagulopathic bleeding.
- Not for volume expansion alone.
Platelets
- Storage: 20–24°C (with agitation)
- Shelf life: 5 days
- Indicated to prevent hemorrhage in patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet function defects.
- Trigger: Platelets less than 10,000/µL (or less than 100,000 with active bleeding)
Cryoprecipitate
- Storage: −18°C
- Shelf life: 1 year
- Contains high concentrations of Factor VIII and fibrinogen — used in hypofibrinogenemia, DIC, and massive hemorrhage.
- Also used in Hemophilia A and Von Willebrand Disease
Golden Rule:
The basic principle of blood component therapy is to prescribe only the specific product the patient needs — one whole blood donation can be separated to benefit several recipients with different needs.”
