Tasnia Tarana: Heavy Menstrual Bleeding When the Cause Is Not in the Uterus
Tasnia Tarana, Medical and Scientific Illustrator at TaraJuhans, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“1 in 5 women who see a doctor for heavy periods actually have an undiagnosed bleeding disorder.
Not a gynecological one. A blood one.
Part 4 of 4. The finale. The first three parts zoomed in, the full map, the tube, the ovary.
This last piece zooms all the way out. Everything above the uterus in this illustration is doing one job: showing that gynecological symptoms dont always start in the uterus.
- Thyroid disorders affect 1 in 8 women in their lifetime, per the American Thyroid Association, and can throw off a cycle long before anyone checks the uterus
- Liver impairment changes how the body clears estrogen, which can directly affect bleeding patterns
- Psychological stress can suppress the signal from brain to ovaries, stopping ovulation entirely
- An undiagnosed bleeding disorder, per CDC data, shows up in roughly 1 in 5
women evaluated for heavy menstrual bleeding
Thats the point of this final piece: the uterus is often where the symptom shows up, not where the cause lives.
As the illustrator across all four of these, it was never to diagnose anything! thats for an endocrinologist, hematologist or gynecologist, depending on where the cause actually sits.
My job was to map how connected this system really is, panel by panel.
4 posts, 1 organ and the body around it that quietly runs the whole thing.
Groups like the American Thyroid Association, Inc. (ATA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Bleeding Disorders Foundation and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) all work on different pieces of this same picture.
Which connection in this image surprised you most?”
