Thomas Georgas: HIT Requires More Than a Platelet Count

Thomas Georgas, Education Specialist at Dorset Council and BCP Council, shared Sysmex Europe’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

”An interesting paradox.

The ‘bleeding-number’ (platelet fall) can distract, while the real emergency is an immune-driven surge in thrombin generation and thrombosis risk.

From an ISO 15189 perspective, it also subtly points to why HIT needs a tightly governed diagnostic pathway—clear referral criteria, defined sample requirements, rapid turnaround, and assay-specific interpretive support—so clinicians can act on probability and results without delay or misinterpretation.”

Sysmex Europe shared a post on LinkedIn:

”What happens when the drug meant to prevent clots starts causing them?

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a rare yet dangerous immune reaction in which antibodies activate platelets, leading to a sharp increase in thrombosis risk.

Understanding these interactions at the molecular level is the first step towards recognising HIT early, when it matters most.”
