Kale Gubae: Comparing the Effectiveness and Safety of Warfarin and Rivaroxaban in Atrial Fibrillation
Kale Gubae, Instructor of Pharmacology at Debre Markos University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences, adding:
“New Publication Alert
I’m pleased to share our latest research, published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences.
Comparison of effectiveness and safety of warfarin with rivaroxaban in patients with atrial fibrillation: a multicenter retrospective cohort study in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of thromboembolic stroke, making effective and safe anticoagulation essential. However, evidence comparing anticoagulant outcomes in Ethiopian clinical settings remains limited.
In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, we evaluated the effectiveness and safety of warfarin and rivaroxaban among 290 patients with atrial fibrillation across three hospitals in Addis Ababa.
Our findings showed lower rates of ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke in the rivaroxaban group. Gastrointestinal bleeding was also significantly more frequent in the warfarin group.
These findings contribute to the evidence on anticoagulant use in Ethiopia and highlight the importance of evaluating both effectiveness and safety in real-world clinical practice. Given the retrospective design, the results should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
How can locally generated clinical evidence better inform anticoagulation decisions and improve patient outcomes in Ethiopia and similar settings?”
