Anand Padmanabhan Presents a Case Series of HIT Patients with Negative Results in HIT ELISAs
Anand Padmanabhan, Professor and Consultant at Mayo Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Excited to present a case series of HIT patients with NEGATIVE results in HIT ELISAs that use targets such as polyvinylsulfonate/PF4 and heparin/PF4, which are the commonest antigens used in HIT diagnostic kits. These antibodies activate platelets, and re-exposure of the patients to heparin based on these negative results ended in platelet counts dropping again, confirming HIT. This study emphasizes the importance of functional testing to make an accurate diagnosis especially in patients with a complex clinical course. I want to acknowledge colleagues from various institutions who contributed cases to this study. Have you seen such patients in your practice? Could this phenomenon be under-recognized?”
